2002 California Conference Showcase comments

"FUNNY!!  Hey baby funny!  Great!"

Rick Overton An Emmy award-winning writer on HBO’s Dennis Miller Live. Has been in 45 films and has had numerous TV appearances.

My take: Comic genius and nurturing instructor.  His workshop gave me a genre path I haven’t tried which seems to have infinite possibilities.  In his workshop he enthusiastically explored the unique synapse paths of each comic and guided us to sharpening our edge.  His stand-up Saturday night took the audience on some of the most incredible act-out trips I’ve ever seen.  Intelligent, edgy and inspiring.

"Very funny! "

Mindy Sterling Master improviser and actress, co-starring in all three Austin Power movies as Frau  Farbissina and alumni of the Groundlings.

My take: I had a blast in the Improv workshop leaving me wanting more. She’s a fun and energetic instructor.  The improv work she did with Rick Overton, Wendy Kamenoff and Marc Hershon after the Saturday showcase was delightful.  We visited quite a bit Sunday morning.  I met her husband and her son Max.  Max is 1 year and 1 week younger than our Max.  Small world.

"Love the carp!  Great opener, love delivery!!  Keep working and getting practice on stage." (Requested demo tape.)

Alisa Roles Segment Producer for ABC's "Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher," booking comedic talent.

My take: She has beautiful eyes- looks like a model.  I was sitting with the Dallas family of comics Sunday morning when she came up to our table with her mom to let me know how much she enjoyed my showcase.  Her mom said “You’re on your way” and “we’ll be keeping tabs on your career”.  Alisa then proceeded to book me for a Star Search audition in LA the following day:  Needless to say, she made a pretty darn good first impression and loved her mom's comments :-)

"Great carp line!  You’re great!" (requested demo tape.)

Gina Rubenstein Reality TV casting agent.

My take: I haven’t had any dialogue with Gina.  I handed her a tape between the comics on the Sunday afternoon showcase. 12/12/02-Update:www.ginarubinstein.com I got an email from her this week and found her site.  I'm delighted to see she helped with the editing and rewriting of the Comedy Bible, a good book on the subject of going pro in the comedy biz.  Gina- I'm sending lots of carp luck to you!  I have no idea what kind of reality show she thinks I'd be good in... but you go Gina, you go....

"Carp very funny.  Strong presence and material.  Great delivery.  Keep doing what you are doing."

Wendy Kamenoff TV warm-up comic, warming up audiences for Mad About You, The Larry Sanders Show, and Almost Perfect.

http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/PersonDetail/personid-89277My take: Wendy was very complimentary in person both Saturday night after the showcase and Sunday morning when she came by our table.  I didn’t take her workshop to know her style of comedy or teaching.

"funny stuff – nice premise and material choices."

Mark Hershon former booker of Seattle’s Underground, San Francisco’s Punchline and producer of San Francisco’s International Comedy Competition.  A movie he wrote, Santa Junior airs this Saturday on the Hallmark Channel.

My take: Strong improv skills.  He was up on stage with Rick and others Saturday night.  Very comfortable with the ensemble and funny.  I don’t know if he did any classes.

"Good material.  Very comfortable onstage."

Danny Robinson Senior VP, head of comedy for Agency for the Performing Arts, coordinating personal appearances for comics in clubs, colleges and corporate events nationwide, as well as variety, theatrical and television shows. Clients include Stephen Wright, Adam Sandler, Louis Black, and Richard Jeni.

My take: Spent some time listening to him at lunch on Saturday.  He respects talent who know their true character and stick by it.  He encourages persistence and staying true to yourself.  He said he’d take my demo tape. I gave him grief  about not marking “video wanted” on the commentary.

" Gutsy and funny !! Material is very unique."

Ellen Sandler Former Co-executive producer of Everybody Loves Raymond, for which she received an Emmy nomination for outstanding Comedy.

My take: I took her how to pitch a sitcom workshop.  Ellen is a tough-gal type of teacher.  She’s shockingly honest on how the industry works.  Listening to her stories of  "LA LA Land"  made the industry seem a bit, well, eerie.  She validated some basic truths about human nature which I’ve believed for a long time, though.

"Joyfully funny.  Used her personality extremely well."

Paul Ryan Comic and TV Host, has hosted and produced many TV shows, during which he has worked with many stars. Currently hosting The Travel Guide With Paul Ryan.

My take: I took Paul’s emcee workshop Sunday morning.  It was a combination of role play, audition and group therapy.  There were so many folks who wept (me included) in this one,  toward the end of the session, I stood up and said…Just a reminder: this is a comedy conference.  Paul coached everyone on being genuine in his session and he’s surprisingly funny in his own way.

"Great use of the pants.  Very funny set-strong presence."

Teri Fiddleman Casting Director, worked on Friends, cast TV series, features, and currently casting for VH-1.

My take: Had lunch with her on Saturday and enjoyed her comments about the entertainment industry.  She’s been in the business of casting for six years.  She’s seems pretty direct and honest.  I didn’t attend her audition workshop to know her teaching style.

"Carp-great opening, great set-and set ending."

Judy Carter President for life of Comedy Workshops and author of the two best selling books on comedy:  The Comedy Bible and Standup Comedy: The Book. http://www.comedyworkshops.com/Frames/JCShome.html

My take: She came up to me after the showcase and said “You Rock!”  Since she wrote the book and organized the conference…those were pretty warm fuzzy words.
