After much cajoling by John Matera, co-owner of Nora’s Coffee Corner, Dawn Holley did a comedy show blending stand-up with improv at the cozy little Grove City coffee house in January 2003. Improvising friends Jared Bader and Nathan Huntwork joined in the improv.

 After a few successful shows at Nora’s as a solo comedian, Dawn realized she needed to find some fellow comedians to help out. While attending a workshop at The Improv  in Cleveland, she recruited some comics she met while performing. Cafe' Comedy came about with the addition of these comics, with the first show taking place July 10, 2003.

Since then, Café Comedy has showcased more than 60 comedians from across the country and Canada. Many shows have been standing room only. Dawn and Cafe' Comedy have been featured in several newspapers, including The Columbus Dispatch. 

“The great reward for me is experiencing those magic moments when people are laughing so hard there are tears in their eyes,” Holley said. “Of course, any liquid spraying through their noses makes it a different sort of magic.”

On June 5, 2004, Café Comedy presented Laughing for Life to benefit Relay for Life to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.  This show marked the first stand-up comedy show on the Little Theater stage.   

Invitations  to provide Cafe' Comedy shows at private and public events came  in August of 2004.  Since Dawn's goal is to perform in each of our diverse states, she's  taken all or part of the show with her.

The main theme of  Dawn's show is-- We all have the capacity to make each other laugh and laughing is good for you. Come by and be a part of the fun.

Highlights of the July Anniversary Shows

We had lots of regulars and many new faces filling the seats and standing at Nora's on the nights of July 8 -10.  The Life section of The Dispatch featured us as the Best Bet for Friday night.   Several folk, who hadn't seen the show before, came up to me afterward thanking us for the fun they had. We've added several of these comments to Cafe' Comedy audience page.    

Much gratitude to Joyce and Bill Lynn, our most dedicated and cherished audience members, who surprised me with a bouquet of roses to kick off  the July 10th show. Then they surprised us again with ice cream cake after we were done!  Pictured: Stargazer lily from our garden joined the roses at home with Diana.  Well, some roses went home with Rhonda, the other half of the Cafe' Comedy Improv Players.  

Favorite moments: Thurs- Chris Forbes' best set yet,  on Saturday- When Rhonda and I did Improv story time with audience words: the Three Little Pigs-as club owners and the Wolf as a dancer.  Of course, when Bill and Joyce gave Preston Albert a 'Hulk' hot wheel...well, that's priceless!

Highlights of the August Shows Second Season Show #1 Our little show being featured in the Weekender was an honor & delight.  So MANY new faces filled the seats(yes, I see the humor in this phrase), others joined us standing at Nora's.  A special thanks to all who drove out to see us-but found Nora's at capacity- Please come early & join us this month!!     The first three shows of our second year started with the sounds of laughter and applause -- thanks to my comedy comrade Rhonda & the many talented folk performing in August.   Record earnings Friday and Saturday nights!!  On behalf of all the August C.C. talent--thank you, thank you, generous audience members, thank you!   Ya'll come back!! Favorite moments: We witnessed the debut of the bright & funny Ben Lee. I'm calling him The Comedian Savant. This 20-year-old Ohio State student performed on his birthday, Thursday night, and we brought him back Friday & Saturday.  We'll be having him back as frequently as his studies and work allows.  Our Friday night show was magic- Victoria Parks singing of frogs & Faye Haire's new bus bit, based on her recent trip to Texas, both winners!! Matt Bok had a wonderful set, too! Saturday night marked a fine C.C. debut of Cleveland's Bill Squire.  Orchestraville's Chris Forbes showed his serious musical side, too.  The melodies weren't comedy, but  Chris gained many new fans Saturday night!  We closed on laughs with a fun name rhyming song and called it a night!  Whew!!

September "Thanks for the laughs--well worth the drive to Grove City.  We WILL be back!" K. Robbins, Columbus, OH  It's was such a pleasure sharing laughs with these comics, I've asked them ALL back for our October shows. Highlights  included Thursday night's  laughter to tears with Tim's stand-up set.  Meghan saying Cafe' Comedy is one the happiest places to perform comedy on the planet.  The joy of doing improv with Rhonda was again demonstrated when we debuted the Antiques Roadshow bit. We both enjoyed doing "Genre's" with our improv guest, Tim Lucas. Seeing the young chef Jason Longbrake's musings was fun on Saturday, and Coffee from Cleveland surprised us by dropping in and doing a set Saturday night, as well.
